The movie is the third in the 'Sholay' film series and the most successful, due to its box office record of almost 3000 crore rupees at the box office. Other than its high box office record, the film is credited with ushering in a new era in Indian films. The film has been screened continuously at the Film Fare Kolkata in India and Overseas at numerous film festivals, including the 60th Berlin International Film Festival.
After Sholay, Sippy produced the masala film Johnny Mera Naam (1977). That too, flopped. In 1978, he decided to experiment with a different film, Amar Prem (a remake of the Tamil film of the same name) and was the biggest hit of the year. The film was based on the life of Gabbar Singh and also starred Amitabh Bachchan as Gabbar's son, Shrinivas. Once again, Sippy's experiment flopped. It was around this time that Sippy made Sholay.
He had a major breakthrough when he made Sholay in 1975. In the years that followed, the director returned to Bombay (now known as Mumbai) time and again to shoot big movies. His numerous hits included the superhit Bhindranwale (released in 1981), which starred Amitabh Bachchan, and Trishakti (1986), which starred Bipasha Basu. Sippy also directed Deewana, released in 1984, which starred Anil Kapoor and his alleged love interest, Madhuri Dixit. None of his films were big hits, but they played to packed houses.
